UNFPA is supporting a multi-agency initiative to empower youth leaders across the world in promoting the adoption of South-South solutions. This Y4S programme, formally called as “Scaling Up Southern Solutions for Sustainable Development Through Advanced Youth Leadership,” aims at raising the engagement of young leaders in South-South Cooperation (SSC). It will enable them to identify and adapt suitable solutions and be able to promote their implementation in their communities in order to bring transformational change.
The agreement was signed on 25 April 2018 in New York by Ramiz Alakabarov, UNFPA Programme Director; and Jorge Chediek, UNOSSC Director and Envoy of the Secretary-General on SSC.
UNFPA’s participation brings in a sexual and reproductive health and rights component into the Y4S programme. The programme includes having youth leaders learn Southern solutions in other countries and work in implementing them in their own country. Within UNFPA, EECARO took the initiative of helping develop the learning curriculum for the pilot learning programme that will be held in Istanbul. These young people will be advised to connect with the relevant UNFPA country offices if they are working on solutions that fit with UNFPA’s country programme implementation.
This increasingly close partnership with UNOSSC will contribute to better implementation of the SSC modality in UNFPA that is coherent with the best practices in the UN system.
