A side event, dedicated to the promotion of science and technology through South-South cooperation was organized during the Tenth Global South-South Development Expo held at the United Nations in New York on December 30. Co-chaired by Ambassador Shahid Kamal, Special Adviser, Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South, and Shahid Husain, Special Adviser, UNOSSC, the event covered presentations by scientists, innovators, diplomats, and officials from UN agencies.
In his opening remarks Mr. Jorge Chediek, Envoy of the Secretary General, and Director of the UN Office for South-South Cooperation spoke of the innovative role of Science and technology in the pursuance of Sustainable Development Goals. Speakers included specialists in the treatment of cancer, promoters of block-chain industry, service providers to small and medium enterprisers, advocates of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, industrial uses of bamboo and rattan products, and of scientific innovations in other avenues of social and economic spheres.
A Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation was signed between UNOSSC and COMSATS at this event and the participants recommended the formation of a Forum for the promotion of Science and technology through South-South Cooperation in the implementation of SDGs.
