UNOSSC and IOM agree to work collaboratively to support humane and orderly migration

The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 23 September 2019 to cooperate in areas of mutual concern and enhance the effectiveness of their development efforts. 

“We reconfirm today that we, as the United Nations, are stronger when we work together, said The UNOSSC Director, Jorge Chediek. “We can achieve so much more when we combine our unique skills, experiences and areas of technical competency than we could alone… We look forward to collaborating and cooperating on the shared goal of furthering sustainable development with IOM and are positive of its potential.”

Mr. Jorge Chediek and Mr. António Vitorino, Director General of IOM, signed the agreement.

In enhancing its development activities UNOSSC will facilitate and promote South-South and triangular cooperation as a means to support humane and orderly migration, and contribute further to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Some of the activities outlined in the document, to be carried out by both parties are:

• Conducting advocacy and joint action while placing the issue of migration within global, regional and national frameworks and policies, related to South-South and triangular cooperation.
• Encouraging Member States, UN entities, and other partners to publish and share the policies, programmes and initiatives on migration that have contributed to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
• Connecting and linking IOM’s South-South Cooperation solutions, capacity building efforts and knowledge to “South-South Galaxy”- the knowledge sharing and partnership brokering platform developed by UNOSSC along with partners. 
• Jointly supporting the generation and sharing of cutting-edge research and evidence on South-South Cooperation and Triangular Cooperation for migration.
• Engaging in joint resource mobilization efforts, including through innovative financing mechanisms. 
• Supporting the UN Network on Migration and the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
