South-South Cooperation Essential to Collaborative Governance on Climate

The China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development andthe Green Development Coalitionof China’s Belt and Road Initiative organized a Roundtable Meeting alongside the High-level segment of the General-Assembly to consider “Collaborative Governance on Climate and UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.

“The collaborative governance of the BRI International Green Development Coalition, with the participation of many stakeholders from developed and developing countries, represents the best spirit of triangular cooperation, as stated in the BAPA+40 outcome document,” said Jorge Chediek, UNOSSC Director and Envoy of the Secretary-General on South-South Cooperation.

Madam Guomei Zhou, of the BRI International Green Development Coalition, highlighted the importance of promoting South-South environmental cooperation in the BRI initiative. She reminded participants that among the 9 priority thematic partnerships of BRI, one is South-South cooperation – for which the main international partner is the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC).

“We are very proud to be part of the BRI International Green Development Coalition,” said Mr. Chediek. “This initiative will be crucial for the achievement of the sustainable development goals, given that greening infrastructure and finance is fundamental.”The Thematic Partnerships under the Belt and Road International Green Development Coalition are an important part of the Belt and Road Initiative. They are also a good example of collaborative governance on climate and the 2030 Agenda. Moving forward, Mr. Chediek emphasized that achieving the crosscutting goals of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement will be challenging.
