African countries have been generating innovative and context-specific solutions, in collaboration with various development actors, to respond to common development challenges including to the COVID- 19 pandemic. Despite restrictions in travel, the closure of borders, and the significant socio-economic impacts of the pandemic on countries, South-South Cooperation and Triangular Cooperation (SSC & TrC) provide cost-effective and novel ways of sharing solutions to address these challenges.
In 2019, The BAPA+40 Outcome Document acknowledged the importance of sharing of knowledge, experiences and best practices, particularly homegrown development approaches, on SSC & TrC in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It invited all relevant stakeholders, State and non-State actors, to do so in order to intensify efforts towards the eradication of poverty in all its forms and dimensions via South-South and triangular cooperation. This also involved building multi-stakeholder partnerships, including with the private sector.
On the occasion of the UN Day for South-South Cooperation, UNDP, in partnership with the UNOSSC, will present the joint publication entitled “Good Practices in South-South and Triangular Cooperation: Scaling up Made-in-Africa Solutions”. This publication maps and codifies African innovative South-South development solutions that have been scaled up or have the potential to be scaled up in Africa and beyond, covering key SDGs related issues such as governance, climate change, disaster risk reduction, energy, agro-food, environment, and inclusiveness. It is expected to inspire governments, private sector and entrepreneurs, civil society and non-governmental organizations, and the general public to adopt, improve and share the Made in Africa and African tailored good practices in their SDG achievement journey.
